THE SLEEP DIARIES: EDITION THREE

WITH MICHELLE O’BRIEN OF ASPHODEL

Welcome to the latest edition of The Sleep Diaries! This month, get ready to be inspired by the phenomenal Michelle O’Brien, the powerhouse behind the Crossfit Kids Program at  Asphodel. As a devoted Crossfitter myself, diving into Michelle's world was not just exciting, but downright exhilarating! She's not only sculpting the future of fitness for Hong Kong's youngsters but also ensuring they hit the pillow for a night of sweet dreams!  Michelle's dedication to fostering both physical and mental strength in children is nothing short of remarkable!

Michelle is truly one of the most positive, encouraging and strong woman I have met and it’s a joy and honour to have been able to delve a little deeper into her world to find out more about her and her beautiful family! She is never without a smile on her face, and a gorgeous one at that, and if you want your kids to get involved in this incredible community and build an incredible foundation of strength in your child, I couldn’t think of a better coach to encourage your child to fall in love with this sport!

PLEASE TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY WITH ASPHODEL GYM, AND WHERE IT ALL BEGAN. I'M IN AWE OF THE FANTASTIC EFFORTS YOU PUT INTO INSPIRING CHILDREN TO DEVELOP A PASSION FOR FITNESS.

In 2012, my husband Chris and I embarked on our CrossFit journey at Asphodel. It happened to be the same year we were getting married, and I was determined to look my best in my wedding gown. Initially, I started going to the gym once a week, but as I began to see results, I quickly increased my attendance to six times a week. While my initial motivation was purely fitness-related, I soon realized that the community at Asphodel was something truly special. It was a group of like-minded individuals who supported each other and held one another accountable on their fitness journeys. Going to the gym became an absolute joy for me, and I found myself going there daily.

I continued to CrossFit throughout both of my pregnancies, embracing the benefits of staying active and fit. However, in 2018, I made the decision to change my career path. I had been working in medical device distribution, which required extensive travel, often being away for two weeks every month. I wanted a job that would allow me to be present for my two young boys in Hong Kong and put them to bed every night. It was during this transition that Cris and Vanessa O'Brien, the owners of Asphodel, approached me and asked if I would take charge of the kids' program. Without hesitation, I accepted the opportunity, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Since then, the Asphodel Kids program has experienced remarkable growth. From just three kids in 2018, we now have a thriving community of 100 kids in 2024. I feel incredibly blessed to work with an amazing team, and together, we run kids' classes across both of our gyms, six days a week. Our program caters to kids aged between 2.5 to 17 years old, providing them with a space where they can move, play, and learn.

Children naturally have an inclination to move, even when we may not want them to. It's challenging for them to sit still. In today's digital age, where post-COVID circumstances, the internet, video games, and smartphones have made kids more sedentary, we often see them evolving into what we affectionately call "couch potatoes."

In Hong Kong, there is a prevailing emphasis on academic pursuits for children, sometimes to the exclusion of other activities. However, we firmly believe in the strong link between exercise and learning. Thankfully, we have observed a shift in people's perceptions in Hong Kong. The importance that was once placed solely on money and prestige has now shifted to prioritize health and happiness. The COVID-19 pandemic has played a significant role in changing mindsets. Everyone now realizes the paramount importance of good health because, without it, we truly have nothing.

Can you tell us a little about yourself, and your family?

I was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and spent my formative years in Sydney, Australia. During my time in Hong Kong, I had the pleasure of meeting my husband, Chris. I have been living in Hong Kong for over 20 years now. Our family has grown to include two wonderful boys, both of whom were born in Hong Kong. Our eldest is nearly 10 years old, while our youngest is almost 6.

Balancing business and family life can be tough. Could you share some strategies you use to manage this juggle effectively?

Like many HK families, we have a trusted caregiver, our wonderful Yaya, holding down the fort at home so that Chris and I are able to work full-time. We try to have breakfast and dinner together on weekdays, and put the boys to bed on most nights. Weekends are sacred. Family time

What are your parenting styles and beliefs?

We try to adopt an active and inclusive approach where we strive to expose our kids to various activities, cultures and foods, while teaching them the importance of making healthy choices and practicing good manners.

How does sleep operate in your home, what are your boundaries with it, and how have you overcome any challenges related to sleep?

Sleep has probably been one of our biggest challenges, especially with two energetic boys who used to wake up before sunrise, regardless of their bedtime. When they were little, my husband and I tried various strategies to help them sleep better, such as reading books, adjusting the room temperature, and playing music. Husband had his ideas and I had mine. There were several debates at 1am in the morning !

Over time, we implemented a bedtime routine that included activities like taking a bath and reading bedtime stories. This routine helped us navigate through the early years. With our second son, we were more relaxed in our approach.

Currently, with your almost 10-year-old and almost 6-year-old, we try to create a calm and peaceful evening atmosphere. We aim to establish a consistent bedtime by having them go to bed relatively early, around the same time each night, to ensure they get enough rest for their early school schedule. This way, Chris and I get some time to ourselves to unwind before bedtime.

We overcame these challenges by understanding this is temporary. A moment in time. A phase. Not permanent!

"What's your ultimate parenting hack, tool, or tip that you'd love to share with other moms to make their lives a bit easier?"

Establishing a routine and incorporating outdoor activities have worked for our family. Having a daily schedule provides structure and predictability for everyone in the household. Getting the boys off the wifi grid by going outdoors engaging them both physically and mentally, eg. playing sports, going for walks, hiking or going for hot chocolate in a coffee shop. The goal is to get the boys to burn off excess energy, leading to better sleep at night. This, in turn, gives us, the parents, more free time in the evenings !!

What do you do for self care?

For me, exercise is the best form of self care. I’m fortunate my work allows me to stay active . It brings me mental clarity and increased confidence to face challenges. Additionally, I love spending time with friends and enjoy a soy mocha whenever time allows. Let my hair down, catch up, have a laugh. It nourishes my body, mind and soul, and gives me so much joy!

Tell me about your life in Hong Kong. What do you love the most about it, how do you spend your free time and do you have any hidden gems to share?

We love HK and its fast -paced lifestyle. You have to work consciously to get that balance of family, health and work. If you can strike that balance, you can have it all.

In our free time, we like to take the boys out of the city and explore HK's famous mountains, visit the beaches, and go camping. Hong Kong's natural landscapes provide a beautiful backdrop for these adventures. We have recently discovered GROUND SWELL , an indoor surf place, the coolest place to be right now in HK!

Hong Kong offers a multitude of options to keep you engaged and entertained. This spirit of exploration and openness to new experiences adds excitement to our life in Hong Kong.

Finally, what is your most favorite part of the day?

My favorite part of the day is putting my boys to bed. It allows me to hear about their day, steal some cuddles and kisses, spend quality time together, and cherish the moments of parenthood.

Michelle, I can't thank you enough for allowing me to delve in to your world! What a fascinating journey you have gone through, and you must be so incredibly proud of the community that you have built!
